Gunners Inconsistency Shows Again
If Arsenal’s youngsters gave Gunners fans optimisim in the week, then the first team must surely have brought them back down to earth after this latest home defeat.
Arsenal again dominated for long periods against Aston Villa, but it was the visitors who took their chances when it counted most. A Gael Clichy own goal and Gabriel Agbonlahor strike was enough to see the points head back to the West Midlands, in a result which seriously dents the Gunners title credentials.
Liverpool temporarily topped the Barclays Premiership after disposing of Bolton in the earlier kick off at the Reebok Stadium. Two headers, from Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard, were enough to see the Reds through.
Liverpool’s stay at top spot was short lived however, as Chelsea produced an impressive away display at the Hawthorns to comfortably beat West Brom. A fine Nicholas Anelka double added to Jose Bosingwa’s opener?to fire the Blues into a three goal half time lead, which is how it stayed until the end.
Elsewhere Manchester United kept up the pressure on the top two, thrashing Stoke 5-0 at Old Trafford with Cristiano Ronaldo grabbing a brace. Tottenham’s unbeaten run under Harry Redknapp came to the end as they were beaten by Fulham at Craven Cottage. Newcastle and Wigan shared the points in an eventful game at St James Park, Titus Branle grabbing a point for the visitors who were reduced to ten men following Emmerson Boyce’s harsh dismissal. West Ham and Portsmouth draw a blank at Upton Park while Sunderalnd moved off the foot?of the table following a 2-1 win at Ewood Park.
Wolves March On
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ winning run continued as they beat Southampton by two goals to one at St Mary’s Stadium.
Chris Iwelumo and David Jones fired the visitors into a two goal lead with just 18 minutes gone. Alex Pearce headed home an instance repsonse, but it wasn’t enough for the Saints, who remain in the bottom three.
Albion Top For First Time In History
Burton Albion stayed top of the Blue Square Premiership yesterday after a 1-0 away win at the leagues bottom side Lewes.
Nigel Clough’s men had gone top of the division for the first time in the club’s 58 year history last week, and compunded this with today’s win, thanks to Greg Pearson who converted form the spot.
Third place Histon have however, got tow games in hand, and they kept up the pressure, beating Kettering by the same scoreine.
