Newcastle Rock Villa

Newcastle United threw the form book out of the window as they beat high flying Aston Villa by two goals to nil at St James Park.

An Obafemi Martins’ brace was enough to seal the win, and Magpies coach Chris Hughton believes this is just a sign of things to come: “We are getting stronger and fitter and that helps and it showed tonight. We’ve been able to get some results and that breeds confidence.”

Coventry City caused a big upset in the Championship as they stunned second place Birmingham City on home soil.

A solitary Clinton Morrison header, his third goal in three games, was enough to settle it, in this entertaining West Midlands derby.

However the home fans may have felt slightly aggrieved not to take a point after it seemed that Frank Queudrue’s effort had crossed the line. TV replays appeared to be inconclusive, as man of the match Keiren Westwood smothered the ball.

The Sky Blues managed to hang onto the three points which lifts them to 14th, while Birmingham failed to close the gap on leaders Wolves.
