Germany suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of Croatia, Darijo Srna opened the scoring for Croatia in the 23rd minute then Ivica Olic doubled the lead just past the hour mark.

Lukas Podolski gave Germany hope when he smashed into the roof of the net from 12 yards with 10 minutes to go, but their hopes of a fightback were ended when midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was dismissed for reacting to a bad tackle by Jerko Leko.

Euro 2008 co-hosts Austria scored an injury-time penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw against Poland in Group B. English referee Howard Webb awarded the penalty for grappling in the box.

West Ham have decided to release veteran winger Nolberto Solano after just one season at Upton Park. The 33-year-old joined the Hammers in August 2007 from Newcastle, and made 23 league appearances for the club.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has continued to add to his squad with Iranian Andranik Teymourian the latest to join the ranks at Craven Cottage. The 25-year-old midfielder joins from Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer.

Former Scottish international striker Mark Burchill has signed for Rotherham United on a two-year deal from Dunfermline. Burchill won six caps from Scotland.

Leigh RMI who were relegated from the Blue Square North last season and will be in the Unibond Premier next season have changed their name to Leigh Genesis. The club, who are moving to a new stadium, have also changed the colour of their playing kit from red to white and black.
