The Czech Republic got the Euro 2008 competition started with a win over co-hosts Switzerland 1-0. Substitute Vaclav Sverkos scoring his first international goal in his third appearance after coming on as a substitute for Jan Koller.

Switzerland who have now gone seven games without a win in the European Championships also lost their striker Alexander Frei just before half-time and he isn’t expected to take part in anymore of the tournament.

Portugal opened their Euro 2008 campain with a 2-0 victory over Turkey in Geneva. Real Madrid defender Pepe opened the scoring in the 61st minute before substitute Raul Meireles scored a second in injury time.

Portugal goalkeeper Quim has been ruled out of Euro 2008 after breaking his right wrist in training on Friday.

Russia coach Guus Hiddink has been dealt another blow after Zenit St Petersburg forward Pavel Pogrebnyak was ruled out of Euro 2008 with a knee injury.

Hull City have sold all of their 20,500 season tickets for their first season in the Premier League.
