Carlisle United beat Leeds United 1-2 at Elland Road in the first leg of their League One play-off semi-final. Danny Graham (31) and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson (49) put the Cumbrians firmly in control before Dougie Freedman gave Leeds hope for the second leg with a 90th minute effort.   

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has won the League Managers’ Association manager of the year award. West Bromwich Albion’s Tony Mowbray took the Championship manager of the year award, Swansea City boss Roberto Martinez won the League One honour and Hereford United’s Graham Turner lifted the League Two award.

Chelsea have completed the signing of 25-year-old right-back Jose Bosingwa on a three-year contract for £16.2m from Porto. The Portugal international will join his new team-mates up after Euro 2008.

Tottenham Hotspur’s 21-year-old midfielder Jamie O’Hara has signed a three-year contract extension with the club.

Referee Mike McCurry has admitted that he was wrong not to award a penalty and to disallow a goal for Dundee United in their 3-1 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox yesterday. The Tangerines are to complain to Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith about McCurry’s handling of the match.
