Cameroon and DR Congo progress from the group stage of the African Cup of Nations.- Liverpool and Manchester United are through to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. Liverpool win 2-1 at Portsmouth with first-half goals from Steven Gerrard (pen) and John Arne Riise. United, with Rio Ferdinand in midfield, enjoy a comfortable 3-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

- Cameroon and DR Congo progress from Group B of the African Cup of Nations. DR Congo lose 0-2 to Cameroon but they edge out Angola on goal difference after the World Cup qualifiers only beat Togo by a 3-2 margin.

- In League Two, second placed Carlisle United are stunned by a 0-3 defeat at Macclesfield Town. Moss Rose stages the annual Fans United Day and attracts an above average crowd of 4,140.
