The Sussex club’s future would have been in grave doubt if they were to remain at the Withdean Stadium.
There are positive financial results from the Premiership with Newcastle United announcing a £4.5million profit and Manchester City a £3.5million profit.- Brighton and Hove Albion are given permission to build a stadium at Falmer, on the outskirts of the city. The Seagulls applied for permission to build the new ground in 2001 and have been waiting since then for a decision. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott ruled on Friday the 23,000-seat arena could be built. Albion have been homeless since being kicked out of the Goldstone Ground in 1997.
- Newcastle United announce a £4.5million profit for the year ending 31 July, although the black & white’s accounts show that it stayed in the black only by selling players that brought in £13.5million. Turnover went down from £90.2million to £87million, which is attributed to a reduction in television revenue.
- Manchester City report a £3.5million operating profit up to 31 May. Although the results are £500,000 down on last year, they take into account former manager Kevin Keegan’s pay-off but not the £21 million received for Shaun Wright-Phillips from Chelsea.
- Prince William prepares for his role as the new Football Association president by visiting Charlton Athletic. The 23 year-old prince trained with the senior players and a group youngsters at the Premiership club’s South London practice ground.
