The Reds captain describes his decision to quit as ‘the hardest I have ever had to make’ after turning down a £100,000 per week contract at Anfield.

- Premiership new boys West Ham United boost their defensive ranks with the triple signing of Cardiff City’s Danny Gabbidon and James Collins (for a combined £3million fee) and Charlton Athletic left-back Paul Konchesky.

- Plymouth Argyle make arguably the biggest signing in the club’s history with the acquisition of Nigeria international Taribo West. The 31-year-old former Inter Milan centre-back joins the Pilgrims from Qatari side Al-Arabi.

- Christian Vieri swaps changing rooms at the San Siro as he signs a two-year deal at AC Milan. The 31 year-old, who had his contract cancelled at Inter, arrived in Milan in 1999 from Lazio for what was then a world record fee of £31 million.

- Work belatedly begins on Doncaster Rovers’ new £34million stadium. The 15,000 capacity arena was due to open for the start of the 2006-07 season but it should now be ready for October or early November.
